Religion and Worldviews Syllabus

LCC Syllabus mockup_edited_edited.jpg

Leicester City Council Agreed Syllabus

The agreed syllabus for Leicester is the culmination of nearly two years of collaborative work involving Wendy Harrison (Consultant RE Adviser), teachers’ advisory groups, members of Leicester SACRE, representatives from various religious and worldview communities, as well as national experts and numerous other stakeholders.

Schools are now implementing a rigorous and detailed syllabus which has, the potential to significantly enhance the teaching of RE. The built-in  planning for each unit not only ensures continuity and coherence  but also saves valuable time for teachers. Progression is ensured  through conceptual strands which run from Reception to KS3 and are supported by detailed disciplinary and substantive knowledge. The syllabus reflects current thinking and the many changes that have taken place since the previous one was implemented. It incorporates both religious and non-religious perspectives, reflecting inclusion as well as diversity.

Primary schools may purchase supporting resources which emphasise a worldviews approach by looking at religions and worldviews through different lens, including through those of children who belong to them. This brings life to the syllabus and enables pupils to engage more effectively with the materials. Training days to support the introduction of the syllabus took place immediately after the launch and during this term training days have covered assessment and the development of philosophical thinking in RE. Secondary teachers following the syllabus have received support in different ways such as 1-1 meetings in school. Many Leicester academies are adapting the syllabus to meet their needs.

By engaging with this syllabus, pupils will gain knowledge, skills, and an understanding of a wide range of religions and worldviews, making it possible for them to play a full part in a diverse society.  This will enable them, over time, to navigate an increasingly complex world. This syllabus has the potential to transform teaching and learning, achieve high quality RE for all and enrich community cohesion for all our children and young people.

Lincolnshire County Council Agreed Syllabus

The new syllabus is an adaptation of the new Leicester agreed syllabus. It was launched in July 2025 and it represents collaborative work involving Wendy Harrison (LA RE Adviser until April 2025), teachers’ advisory groups, members of Lincolnshire SACRE, the Diocese of Lincoln DBE, representatives from various religious and worldview communities, as well as national experts and numerous other stakeholders.

The new syllabus is rigorous and detailed and has the potential to significantly enhance the teaching of RE in Lincolnshire schools. The comprehensive planning for each unit not only ensures continuity and coherence  but also saves valuable time for teachers. Progression is built in through conceptual strands which run from Reception to KS4 and are supported by detailed disciplinary and substantive knowledge. The syllabus reflects current thinking and the many changes that have taken place since the previous one was implemented. It incorporates both religious and non-religious perspectives, reflecting inclusion as well as diversity. The new syllabus recognises the particular issues faced by those who teach mixed age classes. A dedicated group of primary school teachers contributed to the section on mixed age planning and continue to offer support as we move forward with implementation.

By engaging with this syllabus, pupils will gain knowledge, skills, and an understanding of a wide range of religions and worldviews, making it possible for them to play a full part in an increasingly diverse society. This will enable them, over time, to navigate an increasingly complex world. This syllabus has the potential to transform teaching and learning, achieve high quality RE for all and enrich community cohesion for all our children and young people.

Primary schools are able to be purchase easily accessible resources to support teaching and learning. These include viewpoints of children who belong to families from different religions and worldviews. This brings life to the syllabus and enables pupils to engage more effectively with the materials. Face to face training days took place during the summer and autumn term 2025 to support the introduction of the new syllabus and think abut the issues raised by assessment. Regional hubs will offer further help and support. For secondary schools, a support group for is being set up by RE subject leaders. More details to follow!
